On June 14, 1946, Inez N. Green married John T. Hill and moved to Saginaw, MI to begin their married life, and soon after, moved back to York in 1947. After moving back to York and while being a wife and mother, Mrs. Hill worked various full-time jobs throughout the years at York Corporation, Borg Warner, Bendix Corporation, AMF Bowling Equipment, and Caterpillar Tractor Company. During a layoff at Caterpillar, Mrs. Hill decided to enroll at Empire Beauty School. She graduated, got her beautician's license, became the owner and operator of Inez Hill's Beauty Salon in 1972, and retired from her successful business after twenty years.
Mrs. Hill was a lifetime member of Small Memorial A. M. E. Zion Church. In her youth, she was a member of the Sunday School, Christian Endeavor, and the youth choir. Other church activities include fifty-five years of service with Stewardess Board #2, serving as first president, board chaplain, and every other available office. Mrs. Hill was also a member of the claims department; directed the gospel choir for thirty years; and started a children's choir.
Inez was a lifetime member of Crispus Attucks and served on its board. In addition, she was a member of the Crispus Attucks Senior Group and served as secretary; past member of the Wellington Seniors and served as their treasurer; and originated the yearly bus tours, which took the seniors and community members to beautiful locations throughout the United States, like Mississippi, New Orleans, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, and Chicago, to name a few. Inez was a member and chairperson of the nominating committee for the Downtown Chapter of AARP #3060; a member of the American Business Women's Association; and the recipient of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority "Women Who Make a Difference" award. Inez was one of the founding members of the Married Couples' Club, which supported the Miss Bronze contest that helped young women in their careers.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Hill had many hobbies, one of which was traveling. She shared with others the many wonderful memories of her experiences throughout America and globally, including California, Massachusetts, New York, Canada, Florida, South Korea, and the Bahamas, to name a few. Mrs. Hill also enjoyed writing poetry; some of her work was published in various local and community newspapers. Additionally, she directed plays, including "The Glory Train" with the seniors at the Crispus Attucks Center and the Small Memorial AME Zion church choir. Mrs. Hill loved to cook and bake, crochet, and tend to her garden. She planted a vegetable garden every year, and loved to share her crops with family, neighbors, and friends. Mrs. Hill loved to sew and created fashions for her daughters and herself.
Music was very special to her - especially gospel music. She had impeccable harmonizing skills and enjoyed playing spirituals on the piano. Her two favorites were "Your Grace and Mercy" and "I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry." Mother Inez was so in love with her family and cherished each of them, as her family cherished her! She taught them how to love, how to be respectful, caring, kind, honest, obedient, to save money, and be wise in all their affairs. Inez lovingly provided healthcare for her husband, father, and two brothers. She always demonstrated the Proverbs 31 virtuous woman and, indeed, her children, grandchildren, and all who know and love her certainly rise up and call her blessed!
Mrs. Hill loved teaching others, especially the younger generation, about God and His love and how to serve Him. She would always say, "All praises go to God on High! I thank God for His many blessings and how He brought me through. I've done many things in my life, but nothing compares to knowing the LORD, living for Him, and loving Him. God is my refuge and my strength. With God I can do all things!"
Mrs. Inez Hill had six children: 1 of whom proceeded her in death Deborah Y. Hill. In addition to 5 other children she also had 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister and various nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also survived by 4 special sisters-in-law and a special son-in-law. She adored her relationships with the Hill, Green, and Nimmons families.
