On Saturday, August 17, 2013, her 89th birthday, Gertrude Josephine Hogenmiller Kaponin Keys died in Beaver Falls, PA. Born in Weingarten, MO, she was the daughter of the late Emile and Josephine Hanke Hogenmiller of Rockville, MD.
"Trudy," as she was known to her friends, was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Kaponin Helper; her son, James M. Kaponin; and two brothers: Robert C. Hogenmiller and Russell L. Hogenmiller; also, husbands Demetrius Kaponin and Charles Keys.
Trudy was born in Missouri, but spent a lot of her childhood growing up in Cabin John, MD. One of her fondest childhood memories was attending the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn, hosted by First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. As a young student, Trudy often visited the U.S. Capitol. One day while sitting in the Rotunda, a gentleman offered to show her around. After a two hour tour, he wrote his name on a piece of paper. The gentleman turned out to be Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.
Trudy was a graduate of St. Rose Academy in Washington, DC, and she worked for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. She was a knowledgeable and avid collector of antiques and enjoyed traveling, which she did extensively.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2013 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Libertytown. Father Jason Worley will be the celebrant. Online condolences may be shared with the family at hartzlerfuneralhome.com.
