Nancy Ambrose was noted theologian Dr. Howard Thurman's maternal grandmother. She was born into slavery in Madison County, Florida, on a plantation owned by John C. McGhee. During Howard Thurman's early years, Ambrose lived in her daughter Alice Ambrose's home and was a former slave and midwife who helped raise Howard and his two sisters, Henrietta and Madaline Mae.

She profoundly influenced her grandson in his faith and desire to pursue a religious vocation. She and her daughter were members of Mount Bethel Baptist Church in the Waycross community of Daytona Beach, Florida and were women of deep Christian faith. She also instilled in him ideas about egalitarianism and social justice based on Christian principles.

Ambrose lives to the age of ninety-three. Her grandson references her often in his work,
Jesus and the Disinherited (1949).
