Manitoba Dragoons as a Trooper at age 22 and served with the 18th Armoured Car
Regiment, driving an armoured car throughout his service. These vehicles were the
leading edge of troop movement into towns and villages and were also used for
reconnaissance. He served in England and Europe, earning the 1939-1945 Star, the
France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal
with Clasp. During the liberation of Holland in 1945, he met and married Leny tenBos. In
January 1946, Fred was discharged and returned to Canada, with his war bride following
in August. They raised six children on a family farm at Thornhill, Manitoba. Fred was a
member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for over fifty years until he died in June 1996.
