James C. Olsen was born April 26, 1865 at Aarhus, Denmark. His parents were Katherine and Nels Olsen.
He came to America as a young man and settled in Harlan 64 years ago. He married Sena Nielsen at Avoca, Iowa March 5, 1888. The couple observed their 67th wedding anniversary on that date this this year.
Mr Olsen was a tailor by trade, and was engaged in the occupation in Harlan for 50 years before retiring several years ago.
A lifetime member of the Lutheran church he was also a member of the Odd Fellows for 63 years.
Mr Olsen died from a heart attack at his home at 910 Farnum street in Harlan April 6, 1955. He had enjoyed good health previously and his death was unexpected. He had reached the age of 89 years, 11 months and 10 days.
Besides his wife, eight of the ten children born to this marriage survive. They are Mrs Ida Murphy of Sherman Oaks, California; Mrs Elva (Joe) Cotton of Santa Barbara, California; Mrs Rose (Hans) Weinholdt of Santa Rosa, California; Mrs Olga (Charles) Moon of Omaha, Alma at home, Alice of Rock Island, Illinois; Theodore of Omaha and Viggo of Nebraska City, Nebraska. Preceding him in death were two sons, Roy and Carl.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Immanuel Lutheran church in harlan with the Rev. Lyle Paulsen officiating. Pallbearers were Gene Larsen, Alvin Schnack, Norman Sorensen, Emory Hansen, Harold Martens and Arnold Christensen. Burial was in the Harlan cemetery.
