Sally Young DeBor, 77, died Aug. 14, 2007, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was the daughter of Marie Frick and Edward H. Young, formerly of West Brooksville. Because the family moved often she attended numerous schools throughout New England. In 1948 she graduated from New Britain High School in Connecticut, she attended the Teacher's College of Connecticut, now known as Central Connecticut State College and graduated cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., with a B.A. in education. She later attended the Catholic University Graduate School of Social Work in Washington, D.C.

She married Eugene DeBor on Nov. 28, 1952.

They were married 54 years and have four children. Sally taught American History and World History in junior high school. She was creative and imaginative leader of a co-op pre-school for three and four year old children. She worked for Young Playways, a store in Washington, D.C., buying, selling and demonstrating educational toys and materials. She and her husband moved to Brunswick in 1983. Sally advocated for tolerance, understanding, and civil rights for gays and lesbians and for those suffering from mental illness.

She was a certified AIDS counselor and an AIDS Hotline operator. She was cofounder of the first chapter in Maine of the PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), Sally was a member of the First Parish Church, U.C.C. and a charter member of the Church of the Good Samaritan. She enjoyed reading and studying World and American History, especially the Federal Period.

She also enjoyed writing, current events, politics and compiling family history.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene of Portland; and her four sons, Edward and his wife Rosemary of Morrisville, Vt., Emeric and his wife Sally Vogel of Bethesda, Md., Stephan of Des Moines, Iowa, and Christian of Gloucester, N.J.; four grandchildren, Marie, Leigh, Katrina, and Coloman. She is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Young Harrison of Houston, Texas, and Edith Young Davidson of Cape Elizabeth.

Sally's family would like to thank the staff at 75 State Street and the Maine Medical Center for their care and support.

The family plans a private celebration of her life in October.
