Johannes Swanteson worked with his brother Carl Edward Melander in Brooklyn in a parquet floor business. While Carl Edward was in Sweden on a vacation, he came back to find that one of his partners lost all their money. Johannes (my Great Grandfather), moved to Smyrna to become a farmer. Johannes and his wife Johanna had 19 births and 11 of those children survived. In later years, he commited suicide by hanging himself in his barn because he had no money left to feed his farm animals.

He had another younger brother August William Swanteson who stayed in Sweden.
