Packy was the first elephant born in the United States in 44 years. He was born at the Oregon Zoo. His parents were Belle and Thonglaw. Belle became pregnant July 19, 1960. Packy was born near 6:00 in the morning, weighing 225 lbs. Packy was celebrated worldwide. Life magazine dedicated a multi page editorial to him,and there were floats dedicated to him in the Rose Parade. Packy fathered seven children, the last born was Rama. Packy contracted tuberculosis in 2013, a strain that proved to be drug-resistant . After an international search for a compatible medication could not be located, Packy was euthanized and laid to rest at the Elephant Graveyard, where his son Rama was also later buried.
