Edward Wladyslaw Banachowski, 94, passed away in the loving arms of his family at Toledo Hospital on April 22, 2021, following a brief illness. Ed, the second son of Polish immigrants, was born at home on February 13, 1927 to Walter and Mary (Galka) Banachowski. He was raised in the "Polish Village" of Lagrange Street. He instilled a strong sense of pride in their Polish heritage to his six children. He would share facts about the accomplishments and bravery of the Polish people.
Ed attended Macomber High School. He left short of graduation at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Navy where he honorably served his country in World War II. Ed felt blessed to have traveled the world as part of the United States Victory Tour. He completed his G.E.D. while in service. Ed worked for Sears & Roebuck for 35 years where he was recognized as one of the company's most successful salesmen, receiving several awards for his outstanding performance in high-volume sales.
Following retirement, Ed turned his attention to the Bayview Retiree Golf Course, where he was an inaugural member of the all-volunteer team of seniors who organized to bring the then abandoned golf course to life. Ed spent his time helping to run the pro shop and maintain the grounds. During his 25 plus years of volunteer service at Bayview, Ed planted and maintained hundreds of trees. At the age of 76, he was awarded an associate degree in business and marketing from the University of Toledo.
Throughout his life, Ed enjoyed golfing, socializing, Polka dancing, and spending time with his family. He remained active right up until his death. He stopped attending Catholic church festivals and dances only due to COVID related closings. He stayed connected to his heritage and true to his giving nature by volunteering time and donating money to many organizations, some with Polish ties such as St. Hedwig and St. Adalbert's Catholic churches, the Ohio Theater, Echoes of Poland and the Toledo Polish Radio station, and the Cherry Street Mission. In 2019, he was inducted into the Polish Cultural Center Hall of Fame.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, including Chester, Jerome (Harry), and Andrew; and his uncle, John. He is survived by his ex-wife and special love, Phyllis (Stachowiak) Banachowski; and their children, Gwen Mattison, Scott Banachowski, Cheryl (Patrick) Fuller, Renee (Ozzi) Sa, Grace (Tim) Yackee and Elizabeth (Richard) Long; and grandchildren, Tiffany, Sam, Krysta, Nelda, Stella, Olivia, and Edy, and great-grandsons, Nikoli and Sammy.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Clement Catholic Church, 3030 Tremainsville Rd. Toledo, OH 43613 on Tuesday, April 27 at 10 a.m.; masking and social distance rules will be required for attendees. A full military honors burial will be held immediately following at Mount Carmel Cemetery (Toledo, OH) led by the VFW 606 Burial Corps. A full celebration of life for Ed will be held at a later date.
