In 1856, Archibald Black came to Canada from Glasgow, Scotland and bought from John McNeil Lots 3 and 4 of Concession VIII in Westminster Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. In 1860, he bought the SW ¼ of Lot 6 Concession VII from the Crown.

Archibald's nephew, William Black (1835-1889), arrived in Canada in 1858 from Glasgow, and Archibald's properties were turned over to the younger man. The uncle returned to Scotland.

In 1860, William Black married Margaret, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Shillabeer) McNichol who had emigrated from Scotland in 1856.

William and Margaret's children were: Frederick, John McNichol, Adeline Elinore, Alfred Edward Norval, Duncan, William Reginald Fitzgerald, Robert Valentine Clark, and Jean Currie Harkness.
