William Eugene "Bill" Saunders, 78, a lifelong resident of Marceline, died Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1992 at Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield. The funeral was held Saturday morning, May 9 at Bentley-Delaney Funeral Home. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Marceline.
William Eugene was born Apr. 15, 1914 in Marceline, the son of John W. and Emma (Pippin) Saunders. On Sept. 1, 1953, he was married to Ina Louise Fisher in Marceline. Mr. Saunders had worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring as a conductor in April 1978 and had just received his 50 year United Transportation Union pin. Mr. Saunders was a member of the New Hope Baptist Fellowship in Marceline. He was also a member of the Marceline Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Ina of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Lori Saunders of Rothville, and Frank Atkins Jr. and his wife, Sue of Weston, Missouri; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Elroy Carriker of Marceline; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Elva Fisher of Marceline; a son-in-law, Les VanBibber of Liberty, Missouri; two nieces, Judy Maglish of Griffith, Indiana, and Betty Hart of San Francisco, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sondra in August 1989; a brother, Vern Saunders; and four sisters, Blanche Ridges, Mary Wendt, Clara Robinson, and Hattie Hardin.
