Mildred Joyce Johnson passed away on September 21st, 2018. She was born the youngest of 7 children of Charles "Charlie" and Mabel Atwood in Broken Bow, OK. Mildred lived a life of many seasons and is most assuredly known by many as a Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
For those blessed to know her intimately, we are deeply honored to remember her as a woman who could cheat ruthlessly at cards, most notably, even solitaire! She loved the color blue, made everything homemade, and could "whip-up" a chocolate pie that could rival even Paula Dean.
Her home was usually covered in meticulously cared for flowers, and often served as refuge for children who didn't like what mom was making for dinner. Most of our favorite conversations began with, "don't tell your Grandpa…" This notably includes, grabbing her favorite hamburger (mustard only), sneaking off to the casino for a bit of fun, and legendarily crashing her 100cc Enduro motorcycle two days before she was set to race it!
After marrying her husband James in 1964, the family lived for a number of years in Houston, TX before finally settling in Tiawah, OK. Mildred was the proud mother of one daughter, Cheryl Sauvie of Inola, OK.
As the family grew, Mildred had the ability to influence many of her grandchildren. Making chicken noodle soup for the sick, scaring the pants off of her grandkids with terrifying tales of "The Man with the Peg Leg", or simply catching fireflies in the evening, she never ceased to find joy in the smallest of things.
In addition to keeping a cookie filled, bed-sheet fort, card-game friendly home, Mildred had a sense of adventure and was deeply saddened when she had to decommission "Nellie," her 1986 Fox Body 5 speed V6 Mustang. Who knew you could attempt to pull a 30 ft horse trailer with a Mustang? Our grandma! While we don't have photographic evidence, we are certain she often dined with Santa Clause and hobnobbed with the Tooth Fairy herself.
Her legacy will be convincing each of her grandchildren she had been a formally trained as a ninja. These skills were most conspicuously formed while lettering in basketball and serving as a majorette at Cline High School in Houston, TX. As evidence, we offer seeing her petite 5'4 inch frame literally climb trees to swing from ropes. All who knew Mildred knew a competitive spirit which had no bounds. Her husband would testify that the year he purchased an Atari for his anniversary gift, she conquered Pac Man at 2:00 am "just to make a point!"
Mildred will forever be known as a devout Christian. In addition to playing the piano and organ at church, she spoke with God each Saturday that the Sooners played, continuing in devout prayer, showing incredible grace on many of the Sundays she enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys. There are too many words and not enough pages to fill with all of Mildred's talents and hobbies she found joyful. Her laugh and infectious spirit will be missed by all.
