He was born in Watertown, S.D., Jan. 30, 1935, the son of Norman and Ione (Wilson) Battern. He graduated from Hayti (S.D.) High School. He then went into the U.S. Navy serving his country for three and a half years.
He married Marla Gaylene Wayrynen in Watertown Oct. 26, 1956. She died Feb. 18, 1999.
He worked as a truck driver for Dan Dugan Trucking in Marshall, Minn. He moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he went to work as a barber. He then moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he had his own barber shop. He moved to Salem and went to work as an AFLAC agent. He moved to Tigard, where he owned Today's Barbers before retiring and moving to Salem.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, LeAnn Battern Lee of Tigard July 12, 2004.
Survivors include three daughters, Darcel Battern of St. Paul, Kari Moss of Tigard and April Battern of Portland; his mother, Ione Huben of Watertown; two brothers, Ronald Battern of Hastings, Minn.., and Davis Battern of Fergus Falls, Minn.; and two grandchildren.
