Sallie Byrd Carleton Doyle, 71, a devoted wife, loving mother and enthusiastic grandmother, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family Nov. 1, 2007, All Saint's Day. Sallie Byrd was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, to Franklin Hall Carleton and Sarah Emma Louise Face Carleton. She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church and a lifetime resident of Hampton. Sallie Byrd was a 1954 graduate of Hampton High School where she played clarinet in the Crabber Marching Band. In 1958, Sallie Byrd graduated from Madison College, now James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. She attained a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology and psychology. In college, she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and an active participant in student government. Sallie Byrd married Raymond Thomas Doyle Jr. June 21, 1958. They were high school sweethearts and this summer they celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. Upon the death of her father, Sallie and Raymond purchased the Houston Printing & Publishing Company from her family. Sallie served as the corporate secretary/treasurer. Sallie and Ray worked together operating the business at 60 West Mercury Blvd. in Hampton for 36 years before they retired in 2006. Sallie Byrd was especially proud of her three daughters, their husbands and her wonderful six grandchildren. She would use any excuse to be with them and attend their activities. Her brother and best friend, Franklin Hall "Bub" Carleton Jr., his wife Frances and their children, Blake, Skip and Sarah Helen were so much endeared by her. Sallie Byrd was preceded in death by her parents and a precious nephew, Franklin Hall "Buzzy" Carleton III. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Thomas Doyle Jr.; daughters, Sally Ellen and husband Keith Edward Miller of Yorktown, Va., Nancy Elizabeth and husband Jay Edward Mears of Chesapeake, Carolyn Byrd and husband the Rev. Robert John Robertson III of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Mears, Steven Edward Miller, Caroline Taylor Mears, Sarah Ellen Miller, Michael Thomas Robertson and Katherine Byrd Robertson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday conducted by the Rev. Donna-Mae Siderius in St. John's Episcopal Church, 100 West Queens Way, Hampton. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
