He had enlisted in the US Army on April 22, 1917 and was discharged on March 20, 1919, having served during World War I in Company L, 25th Infantry. His elder brother Lonnie Haynes applied for and received an upright military marble cemetery marker for his grave.
Working at odd jobs, single and with cirrhosis of the liver, James was 60 years years old when he died on November 12, 1955 at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital in Hardinsburg. Burial was on November 14h in Hardinsburg Cemetery.
