The Pennys settled in a community that was originally called Bricktown because of the brick manufacturing plant that they established. That town later became Park Ridge, Illinois. George and his father successfully ran the brick works until the rich vein of local clay was depleted, which happened to closely coincide with George's 1868 death from cholera. He was 44 years old and left behind a wife and three children. His fourth child, daughter Emma, died one month prior to George at age 14.
Laura and George Penny's children were:
(1) Arthur W. Penny (1850-1911) married his first cousin Clara Francis Wilson, who was the daughter of George Francis Wilson Sr., the older brother of Laura Wilson Penny. He and Clara had daughter Edith G. Penny Smith and son George Wilson Penny Sr.
(2) Emma J. Penny (1854-1868) was the daughter who preceded her father in death.
(3) Charles Henry Penny (1857-1914) became a purchasing agent, never married, and died at age 57;
(4) Mary Elizabeth Penny (1859-1948) did not marry and died at age 89.
