Son of Jane Elizabeth Boog and Matthew Leishman, who married 1824. Married Augusta Selina Drevar 1859. Glasgow University graduate of 1855, held the chair of Medical Jurisprudence in Anderson's College, edited the Glasgow Medical Journal, and became Regius Professor of Midwifery at Glasgow University in 1868. In 1870 published System of Midwifery which became a text book for the subject. Took charge of a specialist ward for women's diseases at Glasgow Western Infirmary in 1877 and had obstetrics beds at the Glasgow Maternity Hospital. Served as a representative on the General Medical Council 1886-1893.
