Addie was the fifth of nine children of John Dempster and Margaret Muckle, and the last child born abroad before they came to the U.S. in 1854-1855. On their censuses, John and Margaret always indicated they were born in Ireland, but several of their children indicated they thought Margaret was born in Scotland on their records. The family almost immediately settled in the Watertown area after reaching the U.S., and Addie lived there for the rest of her life. John Dempster was a house painter and glazier and they lived right in the center of town. The family belonged to the M.E. (Methodist Episcopal) church, as did a large number of the families in town who came from northern Ireland (there were also quite a few Baptists ). A significant part of the Watertown population was also from southern Ireland, most of whom were Catholic.
Addie was the second wife of John Hartford, whose first wife, named Eliza, died in 1881. Addie married John in 1883. The only census I can find for John as an adult is 1880, where he is recorded as working in a saw mill. Addie and John had one child, Walter, born in 1884, and then John died in 1894 (the dates in the obituary are a little bit off). As mentioned in the obituary, Addie became blind soon after her marriage. I know they had a difficult time, because in 1889 she and her son Walter were recorded as residents of the County Poorhouse. However, Walter and his mother later lived together in Watertown before his marriage, after which he moved to Pennsylvania.
