Dr. James Garrett Anderson Jr., 76, of Flat Top Lake, Ghent, died Friday, Jan. 1, in a Beckley hospital after a long illness.
Born Aug. 26, 1911, at Asheville, N.C., he was the son of the late Dr. J.G. and Lottie Lee Gross Anderson.
Dr. Anderson practiced dentistry in Raleigh County from 1945 until 1986. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his D.D.S. degree from Emory University School of Dentistry at Atlanta, Ga. He served as a dental officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, was a member and past president of the New River Dental Association, a member of the West Virginia and the American Dental associations, a fellow of the American College of Dentistry and a past member of the Medical Service Fund Advisory Council of the West Virginia Department of Human Services.
Dr. Anderson was a past member of the West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners, a member of the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity and was one of the six founders and a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners.
Dr. Anderson was one of the 15 founders and past president of the Flat Top Lake Association and a past member of the Raleigh County Board of Education
Dr. Anderson was a member of All Souls' Episcopal Church at Daniels, Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF&AM, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the Beni-Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston and the Beckley Shrine Club.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. J.B. Anderson; and a sister, Margaret Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Anderson; a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Goode of Ramstein, Germany; a son, James G. Anderson III of Ghent; two brothers, Glen E. Anderson of Raleigh, N.C., and Arthur A. Anderson of Asheville; three grandchildren and a great grandchild.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Calfee Funeral Home chapel at Beckley with Rev. Griffin C. Callahan officiating. Entombment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum at Beckley.
Active pallbearers will be Robert J. Ashworth, Dr. Francis Edwards, Leslie C. Gates, Charles (Mile) Meadows, C.D. Parsons and Dr. James R. Yates.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the New River Dental Association.
Members of the Beckley Masonic Lodge N. 95 AF&AM will conduct graveside rites.
