Eugene Allen Hackett was a student at the University of Maine in Orono, Class of 1901, but his life was lost before that year. He was the first of four UM men to die in the Spanish-American War. He died of disease in Chickamauga, Georgia, just five days short of his 21st birthday. His body was brought home to the town of Mechanic Falls, where his parents were buried. As the news article relates, these young men were accompanied by fellow soldiers, and respectfully met at the station when their train arrived.
