Son of David Highland and Nancy H. Havens. Grandson of the famous bar tender Benjamin Havens who ran a tavern near West Point. The famous drinking song "Benny Havens" is named after him. A painter, he enlisted in Co. H, 5th NY Vol. Inf. Duryee Zouaves in July 1861. Discharged for spinal irritation 3 months later. In February 1864 he enlisted in the 1st NY Engineers and was mustered out in July 1865. Married Frances Kolitzki January 6, 1870. They had two daughters; Mrs. Potter of Burlington IA, and Mrs. Battele of Florida. The family moved to Highland Falls by 1880, working first as a painter and sign painter then as a cashier in 1900. He was buried by the Ryder Post of the G.A.R. in a grave in the haven family plot. (Highland News, November 11, 1902.)
