Son of Michael George "Mike" Smith and his wife, Jill. James was a professional diver. On 1 June, 2003, James made a dive in the Red Sea, near Egypt's Blue Hole. He never resurfaced. His father established a memorial plaque near the dive site that read "Don't let fear stand in the way of your dreams". James was 24. Efforts to find and recover his body were unsuccessful.
