John Wesley Eakin was born in Chuckey, Greene County, Tennessee and later moved a short distance west with his family to Rheatown, still in Greene County. It's here that he most likely met his future wife: Jennie A. McCoy. They were married on 14 September 1871 and had three children: Fred, Joseph and Harry. They moved to and lived in Johnson City, Washington County, close to her sister before moving on to Bristol, Sullivan County, both still in Tennessee.

Jennie passed away on 5 August 1898 and John brought her back to Johnson City for burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. John later remarried Elizabeth Margaret Hartsock on 28 May 1904. His oldest son: Freddie passed away on 13 December 1910 and was brought back to be buried in Oak Hill. John passed away on 23 August 1922 or 24 December 1923 and as with Jennie and Freddie, he too was brought back from Bristol and buried between them.

He was the son of Reverend William A. Eakin and his wife Mary Gordon Reeve. His older brother: William Smith Eakin served during the American Civil War as a Private in Company A, 61st Regiment TN Mounted Infantry, Vaughn's Brigade, Confederate States Army. William was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi by the Union Army on 4 July 1863. He was paroled on 8 July and returned home. After the war he moved to Calhoun County, Iowa.

Note: Burial card on file at Oak Hill Cemetery states birth as 5 June 1838 and death as 23 August 1922. Quite sure 1947 birth is correct due to census records, Death of 24 December 1923 confirm via obituary. Special Thanks to family member Diane for her help on John.
