George H. Sauer Jr., 69, formerly of Waco, passed away May 7, 2013, at Manor Care Health facility in Westerville, Ohio, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. A private service will be held.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Lillian Sauer.

George attended Waco City Schools and the University of Texas. He was a member of the 1963 University of Texas National Championship football team and starred in Texas' win over Alabama in the 1965 Orange Bowl game. He left the University of Texas after being drafted by the New York Jets. As a wide receiver, George was an integral part of the 1969 Jets' Super Bowl III victory over the Baltimore Colts. He broke into the starting lineup as a rookie, was named to four all-star teams, twice named all-pro and named Most Valuable Player by his teammates in 1966. After leaving the Jets, George joined the Carolina Chargers of the American Football Association as a player and defensive coordinator and then became head coach. George was an avid reader and had a passion for writing.

George is survived by his sister, Dana Keifer of Westerville, Ohio; two nephews, Jeff Keifer and wife, Laurie, and Greg Keifer and wife, Laurie, and their families all of Westerville; aunt, Joyce Harnett of El Solyo, Calif.; uncle Robert Werner and wife, Lee, of Ft. Mill, S.C.; and numerous cousins.

Played for the National Champion Texas Longhorns football team in 1963.
Drafted by the New York Jets in 1965, became a starter as a rookie wide receiver and was named Most Valuable Player by his teammates at the end of the 1966 season. In that season, he led the Jets in receiving yards with 63 receptions for 1,079 yards; the first of 3 consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 yards in receptions in a 14 game schedule.
He was named AFL All-Pro in 1967 and 1968. Led the AFL in receptions in 1967. In 84 regular season games over 6 seasons ('65-'70) he had 309 receptions for 4,965 yards (6th on the all time list for Jets recievers); 16.1 yards per catch and 28 touchdowns. He led the AFL in receptions with 75 in 1967
Played in Super Bowl III in 1969, where he caught 8 passes for 133 yards in the Jets victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts.
Retired from the Jets after the 1970 season and later played for the New York Stars and Charlotte Hornets of the World Football League and the Carolina Chargers of the American Football Association as a player/defensive coordinator and then later went on to become the team's head coach for two seasons.
