J. W. Denton, son of J . W. and Mary M. Denton, was born November 19, 1853, in Lamar County, Texas. In his early life in Texas was, to a great extent, a wilderness, with but few schools and they of an inferior grade. His educational advantages were limited. November 12, 1873, he was married to Miss Lizzie Rush, a noble Christian girl. She aided him in his studies and greed for knowledge. To this union nine children were born--two died In infancy, six of the living are members of the church of Christ. The oldest boy, Carlton, is preaching the Gospel. His first wife having died, he afterward married Mrs. Ora Willis. To this union, four children were born. Two died in infancy--their mother died when they (two babies) were three days old. Later he was married to Miss Stena Adams of Levita, Texas. They are now happily living. She is a devoted mother to the two little girls. J. W. Denton has been preaching for thirty-five years. During that time he has baptized a great many people and held many debates, having met in discussion some of the best talents among the Methodists, Baptists, Adventists, Mormons, and Infidels. His home is now and ever has been at Roxton, Texas. He is actively engaged In evangelistic work. Among the disciples, there is not to be found a stronger man or more logical, forceful speaker than John Denton. The advocates of a false position have ever feared him in the field of polemics.---Gospel Preacher is listed in Gospel Preachers Who Blazed the Trail by C. R. Nichol, 1911.

DENTON
Last Wednesday morning February 4, the sad news reached us of the death of Brother J. W. Denton. This was sad news to all the church here, as Brother Denton had labored much with this congregation. His work here was well done. and speaks for itself, and will last as long as time shaH last. I have known Brother Denton for the last thirty years, have been associated with him in the Master's work very much. I found him a faithful true friend, a pure Christian man of God. He was not vacillating, but firm "steadfast, unmovable, always abound in the work of the Lord." He fought a good fight, he has finished his course, he kept the faith." That crown of life is and will be his through all eternity. Brother Denton was a friend of God, like that man Abraham, a friend of God. On account of his great faith, his prompt obedience he was devoted to God, wherever he was. He was a man of peacefulness, given to hospitality, and he was enthusiastically interested in the welfare of others. The church has and will suffer a great loss on the account of his going but this will be heaven'sgain. --H. B. Cash, Firm Foundation, , Feb. 17, 1931, p.8.
