Alfred W. Andres, 84, of Henley, MO., died Friday, February 2, 2007, at Capital Region Medical Center (Jefferson City). He was born July 20, 1922, in Mary's Home, MO, the son of Joseph and Mary Schulte Andres.
Alfred attended elementary school at Our Lady of the Snows School, Klindt School and Sanning School in the Mary's Home Community, as well as one year in St. Louis. He was married on December 16, 1950, in Harrison, AR, to Helen Goetz. In their 56 years of marriage they resided in the Eugene and Brazito area.
Alfred was a World War II Army Veteran. Alfred enlisted in March 1944. He received his basic training in Camp Blanding Florida. In May 1944 he was sent to Europe as part of the 44th Armored Division of the 2nd Infantry Regiment. He saw his first action in the D-Day Invasion. He was part of the European campaign in France, Holland and Belgium. He served as a head machine gunner until January 5, 1945 when he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. When recovered from his injuries, the European armistice had been signed and he continued to serve in a vehicle deployment compound in France.
Alfred grew up farming. In his teen years he worked on local farms as well as on farms in Nebraska. He later owned and operated his own farm. He was a self-taught veterinarian. He also broke and trained horses for farm work and for riding. He competed in both horse shows and rodeos.
In the 1950's he was the manager of the Eugene MFA. He later worked at Capital Supply Company, and as an electrician with the IBEW. In 1971 he began work as an electrician for the Missouri State Highway Patrol from which he retired in 1987. Throughout his adult life, Alfred was also self-employed as an electrician, plumber and doing pump service work.
Alfred was a lifelong member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, Missouri. He served on the Eugene Telephone Board and Town Council. He was a founding member of the Brazito Honey Creek Lions. He was a member of DAV, Chapter 17.
Survivors include his wife Helen, two daughters, Clarine Hart and her husband Cledis of Henley, and Myrna Andres of Jefferson City, and her fiance Todd Phillips of Eldon, one grandson Travis Hart and Todd's children Jeremiah, Gabrielle and Heidi Phillips. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Ambrose Andres, two brothers George Andres and Eugene Andres, and six sisters Francis Newman, Sophie Schweiss, Lucille Schultz, Ida Schwaller, Anna Tellman and Betty Tellman.
Visitation was held 4-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2007 at Phillips Funeral Chapel in Mary's Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church, Mary's Home, with Father Clarence Wiederholt officiating. Burial was in Immanuel Lutheran (Honey Creek) Cemetery. Full Military honors were held at graveside.
