Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Son of Maj. Gen. Robert Paterson and brother of Brig. Gen. Francis E. Patterson. Graduated from the USMA in 1851. Although he left the Army in 1857, he re-enlisted in the Volunteers at the outbreak of the war, and was appointed to the Paymasters Corps. He was then appointed Colonel and commander of the 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the rebellion". He is interred next to his father and brother.
