Paul George Lewis CHARLESTON - Paul George Lewis, son of George Addison Lewis and Thursie Grant Lewis, died on May 14, 2021, in Charleston, SC. He was born on December 5, 1918, in Lincoln County, Georgia. He survived the Great Depression with his 12 siblings. He married Emma Dorice Lewis on August 13, 1939. They had been married for 65 years at the time of her death in 2004. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Osaka, Japan, during the Occupation. As the requisition man for supplies, he earned the title of "The Little Two Striped General", as he was the right hand man for his unit and was only a corporal. He owned a lumber mill in Washington, Georgia. In 1957, he moved with his family to Charleston, SC and began working for Gulf Oil. He drove for Gulf for 25 years. He was commended for 25 years of safe driving. Whenever the company had more dangerous routes through the mountains, they asked him to take the trips. He was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church for many years and then he joined Bethany United Methodist Church to attend services with his sweetheart, Janie Thomas. They had 14 wonderful years together and agreed they had added 10 years to each others' lives. He always sat across from her at meals so he could look into her sparkly blue eyes. She added such happiness to his life. At 90 years old, he wrote his autobiography with amazing accuracy and was so proud to leave his family such a wonderful legacy. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Paula, and her husband, Lt. Colonel Charles E. Newbern. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Laree Lewis (Wayne) and Pamela Lewis Chesney (John). He had 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grands, and 6 great-great-grands. He is also survived by two siblings, Don Lewis and Laree Lewis Boykin. Thank you to Roper Hospice Cottage and their compassionate staff for taking such good care of him in his last days. Thank you to Portia at Ashley River Plantation for being his devoted caregiver during his time there. There will be a memorial service for Paul at Bethany Methodist Church on May 20, 2021, at 11 a.m. for his family and friends. Paul will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In his last days, he woke up long enough to ask about his sweet great-grandsons, Kingston and Crew. Kingston always walked up, placed his little hands on Dada's face, and kissed him on the forehead. He adored baby Crew. He helped others through his time and money. His last and ultimate act of giving was the donation of his body to MUSC for medical research. He so enjoyed being the Patriarch of the extended Lewis family. At almost 102 years old, he asked his youngest daughter, Pam, why he was still living and her reply was "You keep us entertained and we couldn't do without you!" Rest in peace Daddy. We love you!
