Joseph Capel was born to parents Richard Capel and Eleanor Sewell in 1802. He was the eldest of four children born to the couple in Leyton, Essex, England. Joseph worked as a male servant as a groom and a gardener. In 1831 he married Elizabeth Cooper in Walthamstow, St Mary's Church. Together they had eleven children, three that died in infancy. Joseph passed away at home in Haggar Lane, Walthamstow in May 1858 at the age of 55 and was buried in the parish church.
