Harriet C. Sumerwell, 89, a gemologist who owned her own jewelry company, Jacaranda, died April 5 at her home in Washington of complications after a series of strokes.
From 1989 until 2004, Mrs. Sumerwell sold gems and stones out of her home. She also designed and sold jewelry.
Earlier, she was a counselor and client coordinator at the Montgomery County Mental Health Association. During the 1980s, she was a freelance writer and contributed articles to the food sections of newspapers that included The Washington Post.
Harriet Dexter Case, a native of Wilmette, Ill., was a 1943 graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She received a master's degree in education and counseling from American University in 1977. In 1989, she earned certification as a gemologist.
She volunteered and raised money for the Washington Ballet, the old Paul Hill Chorale and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Her first marriage, to Merritt P. Starr, ended in divorce. Her second husband, William N. Sumerwell, died in 1992 after 40 years of marriage. A daughter from her first marriage, Katharine S. Jenner, died in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter from her first marriage, Sarah Starr of Los Angeles; five children from her second marriage, Helen Sumerwell of Bellingham, Wash., Barbara Von Oppenfeld of Phoenix, Brian Sumerwell of Washington, Gail S. Shortledge of Silver Spring and Nancy Berg of Modesto, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
