FORMER BAXTER MAN AND DAUGHTER DIE

Burton Dale Walker and Child Killed by Gas Fumes at Oil Well Near St. John, Kansas

Baxter Springs, Kan., Aug 4, 1952

Burton Dale Walker, 27 years old, of Great Bend, Kans., a former widely known Baxter Springs young man, and his 5-year-old daughter, Beverly Dale, died of gas poisoning Saturday night in an oil well accident three miles south of St John, Kan., which also took the lives of two other persons.

According to information received here, Walker and a crew of men were treating a salt water disposal well with chemicals when a poisonous gas formed and spread over the area.

Mrs. Walker and the daughter had gone to the field to meet Mr. Walker when he finished work and were caught by the spreading gas. Walker and the daughter were killed outright and the mother was made unconcious. She is in the Great Bend hospital.

The accident also took the lives of another worker and his son.

Mrs. Walker is the former Beverly Belle Walker of Baxter Springs.

Mr. Walker was born February 25, 1925, at Zincville, Oklahoma. He attended the Baxter Springs schools and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. After discharge from the Navy in 1946, he enlisted in the Army in 1948. He was discharged from the Army in April of this year. The Walkers resided at Great Bend, having moved there three weeks ago from Duncan, Oklahoma.

Surviving, besides his widow, are an uncle, Robert J. Duncan, with whom he made his home in Baxter Springs; two other uncles and an aunt.

The child is survived by her maternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Roy Walker of Baxter Springs. The bodies are scheduled to arrive in Baxter Springs today and will be received by Wene Funeral Home.
