2697 Sergeant A C Leeson, 1st Battalion the Gloucestershire Regiment. The battalion was stationed at Allahabad in Northern India and was one of 4 battalions sent to South Africa between 16-30 Sep 1899 before the start of the Second Anglo Boer War. They landed at Durban and were deployed in the Ladysmith area in northern Natal. They were first engaged at Rietfontein or Modderspruit on 24 Oct 1899 (8 killed and 57 wounded), about 10km NE of Ladysmith. On 30 Oct 1899 most of the battalion was part of a force sent out to secure Nicholson's Nek, but they were eventually surrounded by Boer forces and were forced to surrender (33 killed and over 80 wounded). Sergeant Leeson was killed in the action at Farquhar's Farm. He is also commemorated on the Gloucestershire Regiment Boer War memorial in Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/198503/).
