DEATH TAKES J.D. WISE
James D Wise, founder of the J.D. Wise & Son Grocery Store & Meat Market, one of the largest retail businesses of its kind in Marion, died Saturday at 4:10 P.M. at his home at 889 East Center Street.
Mr. Wise never fully recovered from an operation late last winter in Columbus. Although he had been able to be up and around, he had bee in failing health since the operation. For the last 12 years Mr. Wise had not been active in business, and about 1930 he sold his interest to his son, Warren J Wise, whose name has always been associated with the business. After Mr. Wise retired he and his wife, who preceded him in death 17 months ago, spent their winters in Florida. The store will be closed all day Tuesday, the day of the funeral. A service at 2 p.m. at the home will be followed by a service at 2:30 at Epworth M.E. Church, of which both Mr. & Mrs. Wise were members. Burial will be made in the Marion Cemetery.
Mr. & Mrs. Wise came to Marion in about 1900, and established the store at 879 East Center Street, which has been identified with the development of the east side of the city. From a small store it has grown to a business that occupies two buildings and an annex, When they first started the store, a combined grocery store and meat market, they also conducted a grocery and meat market on North State Street for several years.
Prior to coming to Marion they lived for several years on a farm East of Caladonia, which had belonged to Mrs. Wise's grandfather Reece They went to housekeeping in New Winchester and lived there ten years before purchasing the Reece farm.
Mr. & Mrs. Wise celebrated their 55th anniversary in August 1937. They were married August 31, 1882 at Cardington by Rev. David Cender. Mrs. Wise, who was Miss Almeda E Reece before her marriage, died March 11, 1938.
Mr. Wise was a native of Crawford county, being born near Bucyrus May 24, 1861, to Henry Wise, a native of near New Winchester, & Sarah Heinlen Wise, a native of Bucyrus.
Surviving are two sons, Warren J Wise, of 676 South Prospect St., and Harold Wise of Daytona, Florida, two daughters, Mrs. Lois Spitler, of 889 East Center Street, and Mrs. Grace Hoskins, of Columbus, a sister, Mrs. Anna Noblet, of New Winchester, eight grandchildren, Mrs. Grace E and Ruth E Wise and Merle E Wise of Marion , Mrs. Charles Howser of east of Marion, Harold Wise, of Marion, James Hoskins, of Marion, Mrs. Frank Mitchell and Oliver Hoskins, of Columbus, and four great grandchildren.
