Barbara Boswell Stauss passed away 5 months shy of her 100th birthday. Born on October 25, 1921, in D'Lo, MS, the daughter of Dr. Henry Boswell (Superintendent of the Mississippi State Sanatorium) and Iola Saunders Boswell. She graduated from Magee High School and Millsaps College (Class of 1943, pre-med, music certificate, KD sorority). She worked as a lab technician at the "San" where she met and married Dr. Hans-Karl Stauss, a thoracic surgeon in Jackson.

In the Congressional Record for the US House of Representative (Feb 6,1974), Thad Cochran introduced her Service to Mankind Award, listing her many accomplishments, especially in support of teachers and parental involvement in childhood education.

"Babs" was the Associate Director of the MS Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) Council on Ministries. She was the President of the MS Congress PTA, MS Church Women United, MS Conference United Methodist Women.

As a Trustee of the global UMC General Council of Finance and Administration, she attended meetings all over the U.S. She was a delegate to UMC General Conference and Southeastern Jurisdictional Conferences. She was a member of the UMC Communicators and Musicians/Artists Fellowship and the Jackson Choral Society. She was the Editor of the MS PTA Bulletin, the Middle MS Girl Scout Council newsletter, the UMC MS Advocate Council on Ministries column, and the St. Luke's UMC Mission Edition.

She served on the Boards of the Bethlehem Center in Jackson, the Meridian Wesley House, the Edwards Street Center in Hattiesburg, the Choctaw Indian Mission, and the Center for Independent Learning (the Friendship Connection). She was on the Boards for Wesley Foundations at Jackson State University, Millsaps College, University of Southern Mississippi, and Wood Junior College.

She sat on the State Governor's Committee on Children and Youth, the MS Alcohol/Drug Abuse Council, the MS Women's Cabinet of Public Affairs, the MS Highway Safety Committee, and the MS Mental Health Association.

She taught Sunday School classes for 40 years and lead workshops for lay academies, local church councils, administrative boards, and PTA councils.

If that weren't enough, she played the organ at Wesley UMC for 30 years — over 1500 Sunday services and 100s of weddings. Later, she was a member and at St. Luke's UMC in Jackson and sang in the choir.

She read ferociously — two newspapers a day and 2-3 books a week, constantly learning. She traveled to Europe and to the Soviet Union (when it was the Soviet Union). And during her time as office manager at Owen Advertising Studio, clients affectionately called her "Granna."

Babs is survived by her sister Peggy Johnson.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Hans Karl Stauss, and her siblings: Col. Henry Boswell II, Helen Dear, and Georgia Neal Tyson.

She and Dr. Stauss had five children: Karl Boswell Stauss (Susie), Lilli-Marie Stauss Owen (LaRue), Barbara Stauss Plunkett (Barry), Hilda Stauss Owen (Hap) and Mark Frederick Stauss (Faith), plus five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

At any given time, her dining room table was the solar system, a Christmas workshop, a dressmaking assembly line, Beowolf's fortress, or an emergency room. When asked how she raised all those kids, she replied, "One or five, it's takes all day."
