The 30 May 1865 New York Times Proclamation, or Pardon begins: .......To the end, therefore, that the authority of the Government of the United States may be restored, and that peace, order and freedom may be established, I, ANDREW JOHNSON, President of the United States, do proclaim and declare that I hereby grant to all persons who have directly or indirectly participated in the existing rebellion, except as hereinafter excepted, amnesty and pardon, with restoration of all rights of property, except as to slaves, and except in cases where legal proceedings under the laws of the United States providing for the confiscation of property of persons engaged in rebellion have been instituted; but on the condition, nevertheless, that every such person shall take and subscribe the following oath or affirmation, and thenceforward keep and maintain said oath inviolate, and which oath shall be registered for permanent preservation, and shall be of the tenor and effect following,.......

Robert Dunlap's 1803 bible page lists William's dates. A copy of the births page is on his father's Findagrave memorial. It says: "William Dunlap Born the 30th March 1811." William Dunlap Marries January 15th 1834. The bible preface says Charleston, Sept. 15, 1803, and is written by Samuel Etheridge. Jerry Dunlap sent me a scan of the bible pages from a Robert Dunlap family member who was willing to share it. Jerry is related to Robert's brother Archibald.

An article is written about him in the 7 May 1890 Staunton Spectator: "We are very sorry to state that Mr. William R Dunlap, an aged and very highly esteemed Christian gentleman, residing near West View, Va., is quite ill. Mr. Dunlap resided all his life or a great part thereof near here, and was one of our most solid and substantial citizens. He is about 78 or 80 years of age, and is suffering now from heart-trouble, and rheumatic troubles. Mr. Dunlap has been from early manhood a very consistent member of the Presbyterian church, and should the summons come for him to go, he is abundantly prepared to enter into that rest prepared for the finally faithful. His second wife was a daughter of Dr. John McChesney, of this county. She was Mrs. Blair. He is very faithfully and tenderly attended by his son, Dr. Jas C Dunlap, of this place, who is a skillful physician, and has resided here many years, where he enjoys the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He has other sons (one of them now dead) Robert Dunlap, who was years ago identified with the iron interests of this county. John lives in Georgia, and J. Rice Dunlap, of Raphine, Va., is his youngest son. We trust Providence may spare him yet a few years." Note: J. Rice Dunlap is actually Rice Harvey Dunlap 1851-1931.

"Mr. Wm R Dunlap, aged 80 years or more, died at his residence near West View last week, and was buried at Shemeriah (sic) Church on Friday." 23 Jul 1890 issue of the Staunton Spectator.

The 30 Jul 1890 issue of the Staunton Spectator & General Advertiser states
William R Dunlap's will was admitted to record in County Court.

Using the gravestone photo taken 1 Nov 2007, I believe it says:
