Our Dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John Tomlinson Beckett passed away April 5, 2010. Dad was born on December 12, 1919 in Atlanta, GA to Seymour and Mary Augusta Beckett. He was one of three children. He moved to St. Johns Island, South Carolina at the age of ten. After graduating from Clemson University Dad served in the U.S. Air Corp as a fighter pilot with the 75th Fighter Squadron. Flight training brought him to the Fort Myers area where he met and married Barbara Ireland. After serving in WWII he moved to Fort Myers and worked as a wholesale distributor for Gulf Oil Corp. Dad dedicated much of his life to community service. He was a member of many professional and community organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 64 years and the Fisherman's Class.

Dad was an avid runner and could be seen running down McGregor every morning. He loved golf and playing hearts with his grandchildren. Dad will be remembered for great strength of character and his zest for life. He appreciated the gift of today and lived it to the fullest. He was a kind and caring man.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Bobbie and daughter Susan. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Chapman (Larry); son, David Beckett; son-in-law David Scott, grandchildren: John, Shannon (Scott), Ryan (Erin), Anna (Nick), Whitney and Ford; great-grandchildren: Kinsey, Addison, Cullen, Grayson, and Wynn and many cherished family members and life-long friends.

Our family wants to give a very special thank you to all of the staff at Douglas T. Jacobson Veterans' Home for their love, care and support.

A celebration of Dad's life will be held Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second St., Fort Myers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to John T. Beckett Educational Scholarship Fund, Lee Memorial Health System Foundation, 9800 S. HealthPark Dr., Suite 210, Fort Myers, FL 33908 or to your favorite charity.
