American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on May 10, 1865 for his actions as a Sergeant with Company I, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry (Washington Blues), US Army, on April 1, 1865, at the Battle of Five Forks, near Petersburg, Virginia. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Capture of flag."
