Born Theodore Joseph Marchibroda, he played quarterback for two teams in the National Football League and later was the head coach for the Baltimore and then Indianapolis Colts, and the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL. He played college football at Saint Bonventure University and the University of Detroit before being drafted by his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers in 1953. He left the Steelers after one year to serve in the United States Army and then rejoined the Steelers in 1955. He finished his playing career with the Chicago Cardinals in 1957 and later became an assistant coach with the Washington Redskins and the Los Angeles Rams. He became the head coach of the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and served until 1979. During his first tenure with the Colts, he led them to three division titles and three trips to the playoffs. After his tenure in Baltimore was over, he became an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Buffalo Bills until being hired to coach the Colts again, who were now in Indianapolis in 1992. He led the Colts to the AFC Championship Game in 1995 before moving on to Baltimore to coach the Ravens the next year. He would coach the Ravens until 1998 when he was fired. His career coaching record was 87-98-1 with a playoff record of 2-4. He was a radio color commentator for the Colts from 1999 to 2006.
