John Jennings was born in Chelford, Cheshire, England in 1847. He was the son of Samuel Jennings (1821-1895) and Margaret Jordell (1825-1900).

John married Eliza (Elizabeth) Cash, and the couple raised eight children. John operated a wheelwright shop in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, called Jennings wheelwrights. The company was founded by his family in 1802.

John died in 1921 at the age of 74.
