Son of Herbert Dee Helton and Lillian "Lillie" Mae Roberts Helton. He enlisted in the U.S Navy in December 1940. He was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor while serving aboard the USS Oklahoma. His remains were identified as part of a U.S. Dept. of Defense POW/MIA identification project for Pearl Harbor casualties. He was survived by his half-brother, Carrol; and half-sisters, Louise Helton Valentour and Glenna Ruth Helton Valentour.

Lillie Roberts married Herbert on August 25, 1921. He was 18, she was 14. She is listed in the Helton household in 1925. After that they appear to have divorced and Herbert has remarried with a new baby in 1930, residing with his parents. Lillie is living with her parents on a 1955 Kentucky census.
