Julia Ann Menear Birtcher was my Great Grandmother on my Mothers side. She was the daughter of Philip Menear and Sarah Francis McKinney. She married Calvin Luther Birtcher on May 30, 1877 in Preston, County West Virginia. To this union was born 4 children as follows; Daisy Anne born 7-17-1878, Charles Irvin born 4-8-1880, James G Blane born 4-17-1882 & Victory Lina born 7-22-1889. They lived in Preston County, West Virginia. Calvin worked as a coal miner in the mines, an explosion occurred on May 21, 1895 at the Monongah mine near Fairmont in which he and his young son James (my grandfather) were in. Calvin drug his young son who was 12 at the time to safety and went back in to help other's. A second explosion occurred and sadly he never made it out. Julia never remarried after Calvin's death. She died in a tragic accident herself on September 12, 1906 after being struck by a train. This story was told to me by my mother Eleanor Genevieve Birtcher McGinnis.
