He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Hon. Sir William Ponsonby (who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo) and Hon. Georgiana Fitzroy.
He was baptised on 5 April 1817 at Kensington, London, England.
He married Maria Theresa Duerbeck on 12 April 1851.
He died on 2 October 1861 at age 45 at Rottagh, Bavaria, Germany, without issue.
He gained the rank of Cornet in 1834 in the 3rd Light Dragoons.
In 1839 he had to leave England to escape his creditors, as a result of his gambling.
He succeeded his uncle, John Ponsonby, as the 3rd Baron Ponsonby of Imokilly, Co. Cork, on 21 February 1855.
