San Jose Evening News, Jan. 14, 1906. "Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, widow of the Rev. William Y. Miller, the Presbyterian clergyman, and mother of the well-known San Jose physician Dr. John J. Miller, passed away yesterday noon at her residence, 233 North Third street, after an illness of six days, aged 75 years. ... Using the words of her son, Mrs. Miller 'had an individuality that will long be remembered.' ... Mrs. Miller was married to James Knox of Knoxville, Ill., in 1851, but within a year after their marriage, she became a widow. She married Rev. Mr. Miller in 1858 and came with him to California in 1883, choosing San Jose for their home. Rev. Mr. Miller died six years ago at the home on North Third street. ... she was a most agreeable entertainer ... brilliant conversation, full of pleasing humor and vivacity. She was greatly interested in all intellectual subjects, but, as she expressed it, liked people better than public movements of any kind. The surviving children are Dr. John J. Miller, Miss Letitia Miller of San Jose, Mrs. Elizabeth Bernal of Nenah, Ireland, and James Knox, United States Shipping Commissioner for the Puget Sound District at Tacoma, Washington. ... The interment at Oak Hill Cemetery will be private."
