Born in Indianapolis (St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, Indiana) on May 19, 1939, Melvin was the son and first child of Emmett Melvin and Edith Lucinda Durnil Chenoweth. He grew up on the southside of Indy, attended Emmerich Manual Training High School and Harry E. Wood High School (Barber School), graduating in 1957. Melvin was a barber in his dad's barber shop at 2612 Shelby Street in Indianapolis until the long hair of the late '60s and early '70s caused him to seek other opportunities. He was hired at Edward H. Schmidt & Sons optical lab in Indianapolis and learned to be a finish optician, working there until 1992, when he was hired by Walmart at their optical lab in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He worked for Walmart in their optical lab and vision centers until his retirement in January, 2001. He then traveled the U.S. with his wife Jill in a motor home, visiting nearly every state and also Canada. Melvin loved gardening, tinkering in his garage, visiting with friends, traveling in an RV, and most of all his family. He was a loving father to Delisa Jill White and Pamela Joyce Evans, and a doting grandpa to Amy Elizabeth Narr and Tyler James Narr. He will always be lovingly remembered.
