As an active member for 57 years of the Congregational Church of Somersville, she was involved in many activities such as church clerk, and serving on the mission committee, board of deacons, and as a Sunday School teacher. She also worked with the Ladies Aid Society and at the Blacksmith Shoppe, which is a thrift shoppe operated by the Ladies Aid out of a building that was an active Smith in the mid 1800s. Genny's husband Bo's great grandfather Farnham learned his trade as a blacksmith there. She was active in the Somers community and was elected by the people to serve on the library board in the 1970s - she thought that was a great honor. Genny was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Buck-Dubiel Unit 101, in Somers.
The Somers Senior Center became a hub of activity for her after retirement in 1997, first as a volunteer secretary and then later as an active member. She also did volunteer work at Rockville Hospital and Woodlake Healthcare Center. Genny was on a first name acquaintance with President Jimmy Carter and attended a luncheon at the Hartford Hilton for him and was formally invited to his presidential inauguration. They were fellow Georgians.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for calling hours on Tuesday, July 6, from 6- 8 p.m. at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., Somers. A service will be held on Wednesday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Somersville, 22 Maple St., Somersville. Please meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Ellington Center Cemetery.
