He served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Allan received his Bachelor of Arts and Law Degrees from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Following graduation, he was engaged in the private practice of law in Newton, Iowa. He later began working in the trust banking business, administering Estates, Trusts and investment accounts.
Allan retired from BMO Harris Bank, Chicago as Vice President and Senior Trust Administrator.
He is a past-president of the Estate Planning Council of Greater Joliet.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, he served as both Deacon and Elder.
Allan enjoyed community service with the Joliet Noon Lions Club as past-president and Melvin Jones Fellow; the Rialto Square Theatre volunteer and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
He was a terrible golfer but thoroughly enjoyed his rounds with Marion at the Morris Country Club. Despite their lack of golf proficiency, both Allan and Marion scored holes-in-one.
During his retirement, he and Marion enjoyed traveling to over twenty countries in addition to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Survived by his loving wife of 51 years Marion L. Somers (nee Dierkes); their children Jeffrey (Kara) Somers and Jennifer (Dave) Crago. Six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. His sister Barbara Dudley.
Preceded in death by his parents Dale and Mary Somers (nee Shakespeare) and his sister Marilyn Miller
