John Madison Strain was the son of Dr. David E. Strain and Margaret Jane (Dunlap) Strain. He was likely given the name Madison, for his grandfather Madison Dunlap.

A notice in the 22 Apr 1884 issue of the Staunton Spectator says: "We are sorry to learn that Mr. John Strain, aged about 19 years, son of Dr. D.E. Strain, late assistant physician at the W.L. Asylum, is lying very ill with pneumonia. He had the measles for several weeks, which was followed by pneumonia, which has rendered his condition exceedingly critical. As soon as the condition of his son will permit, Dr. Strain will removed his residence from this city to his fine farm near-Brownsburg, Rockbridge county, long known as the "Johnson farm." (Should have said Johnston farm since Zachariah Johnston, Jr. owned it prior to Dr. Strain.")

1890: The census enumerators for this county are: ...Walkers Creek District: John Strain... These men started working June 2. News of Fifty Years Ago in the Lexington Gazette, Elihu H Barclay, Editor, June 5, 1890 article in the Lexington Gazette, Vol 137, #23, dated 14 June 1940.

On 11 Nov 1897, John was the best man at brother David's wedding at New Providence Church.
