Ottoman Emperor. He was the 30th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and reigned from 1808 until his death.. In 1813 he was successful in defeating and killing the Wahabites who had overthrown and occupied the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. During his reign the first breakaway of the Ottoman Empire also occurred when Greece gained its independence at the Battle of Navarino. This event was followed by France's occupation of Algeria in 1830 and the gradual break-up of the Ottoman Empire had begun. Among his notable achievements was the abolishment of the corrupt and hated Janissary Corps, a once elite military corps that was, at this time, extorting money from the state and dictating government policy.. In his last year of reign he also began the Tanzimat reform which marked the beginning of Turkish modernization. He established a number of new schools and many huge buildings. He caused all of the great mosques in Istanbul to be restored. He established the Islamic school of Theology at Mecca. He built a warship that was to be the world's largest for many years. He died from tuberculosis and was succeeded by his son.
