William Thurmond (or Thomas, according to some) Knight was born in 1860 to Mary Jane Bradford and Robert Franklin (Mc)Knight, when his mother was 18 and his father 20 years old. His parents married in 1859, according to Tennessee marriage records. His father Robert (Mc)Knight died sometime before 1869, possibly in the Civil War. William appears as an infant in the 1860 census in the house of his father, and then in the 1870 census in the household of his step-father William Wilkins.
William Knight killed his step-father's brother, Thomas Wilkins, on November 2, 1877. William was 17 years old at the time. He was arrested within days, and prison records show he remained incarcerated until March 5, 1891.
In 1894, William married Bethany Caroline Rikard in Lafayette County, Mississippi. Eleven children were born in Mississippi.
