Banker & financier. After completing a plumber's apprenticeship in St. Louis, Thompson became a plumber & later embarked in the manufacture of lead pipe & plumber's supplies. As a merchant & manufacturer he gave such sound advice that it led to his prominence as a financier & chief executive officer of one of the great monetary institutions of the country, the Bank of Commerce. Thompson was one of the leading sponsors of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
